Longshot - Complete transparency about your data

🔒 Our Privacy Commitment

Longshot collects ZERO data. We believe privacy is a fundamental right, not a feature. Everything happens locally in your browser. We never see your screenshots, browsing activity, or personal information.

Overview

Longshot is a privacy-first Chrome extension designed to capture full-page screenshots of web pages. We built Longshot with a foundational commitment to user privacy, which means your data stays on your device where it belongs.

What Data We Collect

None. Longshot does not collect, store, track, or transmit any user data whatsoever.

Specifically, we do NOT:

How Longshot Works

Understanding how Longshot operates will help you see why your privacy is protected:

  1. You trigger a capture: Click the extension icon or use a keyboard shortcut
  2. Local page analysis: Longshot reads the page dimensions in your browser
  3. Screenshot capture: Uses Chrome's built-in captureVisibleTab API to take screenshots
  4. Local stitching: Combines screenshots in an offscreen document in your browser
  5. Direct download: Saves the PNG file directly to your computer

Every step happens locally. No external servers are involved.

Permissions Explanation

Longshot requests several Chrome permissions to function. Here's exactly what each permission is used for:

activeTab

Allows Longshot to capture the visible portion of the current browser tab when you click the extension icon or use a keyboard shortcut.

tabs

Enables Longshot to read the page title and URL to generate descriptive filenames for your screenshots (e.g., PageTitle_hostname_timestamp.png).

downloads

Permits Longshot to save the captured screenshot PNG file directly to your computer's download folder.

scripting

Allows Longshot to inject a content script into web pages to detect scroll positions and measure page dimensions needed for full-page capture.

offscreen

Enables creation of an offscreen document where multiple viewport captures are stitched together into a single full-page image using OffscreenCanvas.

storage

Stores your extension preferences (like whether to expand content before capture) locally in your browser's storage. This data never leaves your device.

host_permissions (<all_urls>)

Allows you to capture screenshots on any website you choose to visit. Longshot only accesses pages when you explicitly trigger a capture and performs all processing locally.

Your Screenshots

Screenshots you create with Longshot are:

Third-Party Services

Longshot does not use any third-party services, analytics, tracking, or external libraries. The extension is completely self-contained.

We do NOT integrate with:

Data Security

Since we don't collect any data, there is no data to secure, breach, or compromise. Your screenshots remain entirely on your device and are never touched by external servers.

We take security seriously in the extension's design:

Open Source Transparency

Longshot is fully open source. You can review the complete source code to verify our privacy claims:

You can:

Children's Privacy

Longshot does not collect data from anyone, including children under 13. Since we collect no data at all, there are no age restrictions on using Longshot.

International Users

Longshot works the same way for all users worldwide. Since all processing is local and we collect no data, there are no regional differences in privacy protection. Your data stays on your device regardless of where you are located.

Changes to This Policy

If we ever change how the extension handles data (spoiler: we won't), we will update this policy and the extension version. However, our commitment to zero data collection is fundamental to Longshot's design.

If we ever need to update this privacy policy, we will:

Your Rights

Since we collect no data about you:

You have complete control over your screenshots as they're saved directly to your device.

✨ Privacy by Design

Longshot was built with privacy as the foundation, not an afterthought. We can't misuse your data because we never have access to it in the first place. Your trust is more valuable than any data we could collect.
